Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan – Not a Friend to Lactation

Unfortunately, private lactation consultants are not permitted by BCBS of Michigan to bill for care, because Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan does not cover S9443 (the standalone code for lactation care). UM and Trinity (or doctor’s offices) bill under physician or facility codes.

I am in-network as an IBCLC with BCBS nationally and have billed Anthem BCBS, Federal BCBS, BCBS of TX, BCBS of IL, BCBS of AZ, etc., with no issues. My clients have had coverage for ongoing visits with zero out of pocket cost, similar to Cigna, United, and other health plans. They cover S9443 as preventative care, which is compliant with the Affordable Care Act.

BCBS of Michigan is an embarrassing outlier, and the lack of coverage is incredibly frustrating for parents and providers alike.

Please consider signing our petition to BCBS of Michigan to change their coverage, and feel free to let your insurance rep know that you are frustrated by their policy. ❤

In the meantime, several of us in the area offer sliding scale for clients without coverage, including myself.
