Signs of Readiness for Solid Food

Parents are often excited to introduce solids with their little one for the first time. I remember it fondly as one of my favorite phases with my daughter!

However, before introducing solid foods, it is important to make sure that baby is ready.

The World Health Organization recommends waiting until 6 months of age to introduce solids – but age is not the only consideration. I encourage parents to wait until 6 months (for gut maturity) AND to ensure baby is meeting the signs of readiness below.

Here are some key indicators to look for:

Showing an Interest in Food:

If your baby watches you eat, reaches for your food, or opens their mouth when food is offered, they may be ready to try solids.

Head and Neck Control + Mobility

Baby should have optimal head and neck control, with the ability to turn their head equally & fully to both sides.

Ability to Sit Unassisted

This one is important, and one I see commonly ignored!

Baby should be able to sit up with minimal to no support (just like this guy!).

If a child is slumped in their high chair or can only sit with support from the parent’s body, they may need more tummy time to help them build the muscles & coordination to sit unassisted.

Loss of the Tongue-Thrust Reflex:

Babies are born with a reflex that causes them to push anything out of their mouths with their tongues. When this reflex diminishes, they are better able to coordinate solid foods in their mouth & swallow them.

Ability to Pick Up Objects & Bring them to Mouth:

Babies who can grab objects and bring them to their mouth show signs of being able to handle solids. You can test this with toys!

Baby Not Ready Yet?

If your baby is struggling to meet these signs of readiness despite being 6 months of age, don’t panic. Human milk or formula is still the primary source of nutrition, and it is much more important to wait until baby is ready than to rush into introducing solids prematurely.

It may be helpful to consult an Occupational Therapist (OT) in your area who can offer evaluation & exercises to help make targeted progress towards readiness.
